Travel Restrictions on Americans Erode a Sense of Passport Privilege


The Hart publication Dr. Christian H. Kälin co-created, the Kälin – Kochenov Quality of Nationality Index, features in this thought-provoking article in The New York Times. The article highlights the decline of the US passport in the coronavirus era. The EU recently released a list of 14 countries from which it will accept visitors, and due to its poor management of Covid-19, the US did not feature. While this travel restriction may be temporary, the allure of the once sought-after US passport is waning. US citizens enjoy far less settlement freedom than their EU counterparts who have full settlement rights in any EU member state, and thus EU passports outrank the US passport in terms of quality, and travel and settlement freedom in particular.
