As this Forbes article demonstrates, the debate around investment migration is changing. Increasingly, popular opinion is becoming better informed and more nuanced than it has ever been before, with more genuine attempts being made to objectively assess citizenship in general and citizenship-by-investment in particular. Citizenship-by-investment is, in many ways, a much more sensible means of attributing citizenship rights than by naturalization or descent. These more traditional forms of bestowing citizenship are something that the author, John Torpey, neatly summarizes as amounting to “a deeply illiberal institution [that] rewards some and punishes others on the arbitrary basis of where or to whom they were born.”
